Redefining the Role of Art Galleries

Galerie Ernst Hilger

Ernst Hilger, a renowned art gallery based in Vienna, is a unique entity in the art world. Founded in 1971, the gallery has been at the forefront of promoting and representing artists' works from the 1960s onwards, including the leading exponents of the most important international art movements of the 20th century. What sets Ernst Hilger apart from other galleries is its commitment to nurturing emerging talent, innovative approach to providing platforms for cutting-edge artists, and dedication to fostering partnerships with museums, collectors, and state representatives.

Ernst Hilger has a rich history of representing the works of artists such as Erró, Mel Ramos, Pablo Picasso, Jean Dubuffet, Andy Warhol, and Keith Haring, among others. The gallery has also been instrumental in promoting the Narrative Figuration movement with artists like Jacques Monory. Ernst Hilger himself has been a significant figure in the art world, serving as the head of the FEAGA for several years and as a member of numerous art fair committees, including Art Basel. His leadership in the Austrian Gallery Association has helped shape the conception of the role of galleries as partners of museums, collectors, and representatives of the state.

Ernst Hilger has always been committed to nurturing emerging talent. The gallery's Hilger NEXT initiative provides artists from cutting-edge countries a platform to showcase their work. Over the years, the gallery's efforts have been rewarded with the participation of its artists in important international exhibitions and biennales, including the Venice Biennale and exhibitions at the Palais de Tokyo, MOMA, Mannheimer Kunstverein, and Kunsthalle Brandts.

2009 the HilgerBROTKunsthalle was inaugurated to extend and strengthen the gallery's cooperation with international exhibition venues and museums. This 800m² space serves as the gallery's laboratory for curatorial projects and has been instrumental in bringing exhibition projects to other institutional locations. The HilgerBROTKunsthalle also houses three guest apartments for visiting and working artists and curators, further fostering international collaborations.

In 2022, Ernst Hilger opened an additional pop-up gallery space in the center of town, Ballgasse 1, to showcase mainly new, yet-to-be-established art while the artists familiar to the gallery's audience remain in Dorotheergasse.

Ernst Hilger has also been a pioneer in promoting street art. In 2013, the gallery presented the Street Art exhibition Cash, Cans & Candy, which showcased works by over 40 Austrian and international artists from all continents. The exhibition featured pioneers, established street artists, and artists beginning to introduce their works to a larger audience. This large-scale exhibition venture was presented simultaneously at HilgerBROTKunsthalle and Gallery Hilger NEXT, putting the former Anker bread factory ? the new art cluster & cultural hub ? in the public spotlight as a vibrant location for new art and cultural activity.

Ernst Hilger is more than just an art gallery; it is a pioneering force in contemporary art. Its commitment to nurturing emerging talent, innovative approach to providing platforms for cutting-edge artists, and dedication to fostering partnerships with museums, collectors, and state representatives make it a unique entity in the art world. Whether promoting influential artists' works, engaging with emerging talent, or pioneering large-scale exhibitions, Ernst Hilger continues to impact the art world significantly.
