The auction house Christie's will auction today at Rockefeller Center in New York a BMW designed by artist Jeff Koons, it is the last of a limited series of 99 copies. The money will benefit an American center for missing and exploited children. The auction starts at 8:30 a.m. local time. The other examples were sold within a few days of the world premiere at a unit price of around 350,000 euros. The cars will be delivered starting in May.
Koons reportedly wanted to design his version of the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe for a long time. The car is painted in eleven different colors in the style of a comic strip, which required 200 hours of manual work for each copy.
The action should come as no surprise to those who knows Koons. Koons had already designed a BMW M3 in 2010, which took part in the Le Mans 24-hour race. Koons has also designed wine labels for the House of Rothschild and a cover for an album by Lady Gaga. Most recently, Jeff Koons has attracted attention with a moon project.
