Christie's achieved a total of £167,814,400 ($202,216,352) at their first 20th/21st Century Art auction series in 2023. The sale featured works by major Impressionist, Modern, Post-War, and Contemporary artists and pioneering female artists of the Surrealist movement.
The top-selling piece was Pablo Picasso's Femme dans un rocking-chair (Jacqueline), which sold for £16,892,000. Other notable works sold included pieces by Paul Cezanne, Vincent van Gogh, Auguste Renoir, Lucian Freud, David Hockney, and Liu Ye. Seven artists set auction records across both sales, including Michaela Yearwood-Dan, Óscar Domínguez, Tyler Hobbs, and Caroline Walker. The sale achieved a sell-through rate of 89% by lot and 91% by value.
The Art of the Surreal Evening Sale was part of the series and achieved £38,861,900 ($46,828,590). The sale saw new auction records set for young female painters and works by leading women artists of the Surrealist movement.
