The Whitney Museum's landmark exhibition "No Existe Un Mundo Poshuracán: Puerto Rican Art in the Wake of Hurricane Maria" showcases the resilience of Puerto Rican artists in the aftermath of the devastating hurricane. Curator Marcela Guerrero used Raquel Salas Rivera's poem as the guiding light for the exhibition, which features a variety of artworks in different mediums that reflect the current state of artistic production in Puerto Rico and beyond.
The works explore the multitude of emotions that Maria elicited, as well as reflections on the confluence of important events that predate and follow Maria. The exhibition also critiques the long history of Puerto Rico being marketed as a Caribbean paradise, and presents works that reflect on the instability of Puerto Rico's infrastructure and agriculture.
Ultimately, the exhibition proposes that art can be the medium of a post-hurricane, post-austerity, post-earthquake, post-pandemic world, and encourages viewers to imagine an alternative.
