Creativity, The Unseen Universe

Chemould Prescott Road

Chemould Prescott Road, established in 1963 by Kekoo and Khorshed Gandhy in Mumbai, is one of India's first exhibition spaces focusing on modern and contemporary art. The gallery has played a significant role in nurturing and representing many of India's contemporary artists, making it a cornerstone in the country's art scene.

The gallery was born out of a vision to present works by the country's most prominent artists across interdisciplinary and experimental mediums. Over the years, Chemould Prescott Road has pioneered the early careers of leading artists, including S. H. Raza, Tyeb Mehta, Bhupen Khakhar, Atul Dodiya, Anju Dodiya, and L.N. Tallur, among others. Through its institutional collaborations, the gallery has coordinated retrospectives of artists like Jitish Kallat at the National Gallery of Modern Art Delhi, NS Harsha at the Mori Art Museum, and Mehlli Gobhai at the National Gallery of Modern Art Mumbai.

In 2007, the gallery moved to a large loft-like space on Prescott Road, marking a new chapter in its history. Under the current directorship of Shireen Gandhy, Chemould Prescott Road has placed works in various private and public collections of leading international museums, including the Guggenheim Foundation, the Tate Modern, the Kunsthaus Zürich, the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, The Cincinnati Art Museum, M+ and The Art Institute of Chicago.

In 2022, the gallery introduced a second space in Mumbai, Chemould CoLab, emphasizing new and exciting work by emerging talent, alongside a summer residency program. This initiative underscores the gallery's commitment to nurturing the next generation of artists and fostering a vibrant and diverse art scene.

Shireen Gandhy, the current director of Chemould Prescott Road, has built collections, curated exhibitions, and nurtured the careers of many of the most prolific Indian artists working today. Her expansive career and passionate advocacy for great works of art have made her a renowned figure in the art world.
