Diversity: The Rainbow of Creativity

Roberts Projects

Roberts Projects, a contemporary art gallery based in Los Angeles, California, has been a significant player in the art world since its establishment in 1999. Originally founded as Roberts & Tilton by partners Bennett Roberts, Julie Roberts, and Jack Tilton, the gallery changed its name to Roberts Projects in 2018 following the passing of Jack Tilton. The gallery represents mid-career and established artists of international recognition as well as emerging artists, with a focus on presenting a diverse and ambitious program emphasizing museum-quality, installation-based exhibitions.

The gallery occupies a 10,000 sq ft historic automobile showroom, which features four exhibition spaces, a bookshop, and a permanent site-specific space conceived by the trailblazing artist Betye Saar. The architectural conversion was realized by the firm of Johnston Marklee, with lighting design led by Buro Happold. The main exhibition space, highlighted by a 30-foot-high vaulted ceiling with illuminated “wings,” offers a unique viewing experience.

Roberts Projects has a rich history of supporting artists who work using a variety of mediums, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, film, and performance. By exhibiting artists across multiple generations and continents, the gallery establishes a discursive critical voice in addressing diverse perspectives of art within a broader context of contemporary artistic practices.

In addition to its exhibitions, the gallery's publication division produces books and catalogues focusing on exhibition surveys, contemporary artists, and art historical monographs. This commitment to documenting the work of its artists extends the gallery's influence beyond the traditional gallery space and into the realm of publishing.

Roberts Projects also recognizes the urgent and ongoing environmental crises the world is presently facing. The gallery is committed to reducing its role in systems driving climate change by joining the Gallery Climate Coalition, conducting annual carbon audits, prioritizing sustainable shipping options, and reducing staff flights, among other initiatives.

Roberts Projects stands as a beacon of contemporary art in Los Angeles. Its dedication to promoting a diverse range of artists, its commitment to fostering dialogue and understanding through its events and publications, and its comprehensive approach to art collection and curation make it a significant player in the global art scene. As it continues to evolve and adapt to the changing art world, Roberts Projects remains committed to showcasing the works of artists who reflect the Zeitgeist and to providing a unique and engaging experience for all who visit.
