Spice of Creativity: Diversity
Drawing Room
Located in southeast London, Drawing Room is a not-for-profit organisation that has carved a unique niche in the art world. It is a gallery that presents inspiring free exhibitions of drawings by artists of international standing and emerging promise. Established in 2002 by curators Mary Doyle, Kate Macfarlane, and Katharine Stout, Drawing Room has grown to become the UK and European centre for the exploration, appreciation, and expression of drawing.
The gallery is home to a unique open access research library, which holds one of the largest collections of titles on contemporary drawing in the world. This resource is complemented by a shop that stocks selected books, drawing materials, and artists’ editions. The gallery's dynamic learning programme makes contemporary drawing relevant and accessible to its communities, encouraging self-expression through hands-on making in its dedicated learning studio and throughout its local area.
Drawing Room's exhibitions, research, and learning activities, together with talks, artist-led projects, special commissions, and other events, nurture artistic talent through supporting the production of new work and share the diversity of drawing with an ever-widening audience. The gallery is a division of Tannery Arts, which provides studio space, support, and resources for artists, together forming Tannery Arts Ltd, a unique creative partnership.
Drawing Room is a non-profit public organisation that relies on the support of individuals, organisations, and trusts, alongside the funding it receives from Arts Council England as a National Portfolio Organisation. It is indebted to its Drawing Circle and Drawing Room Network Members and to the many artists who donate drawings to its Biennial Fundraising exhibitions, gifts that endorse the value that artists’ place on Drawing Room.
Drawing Room is a dynamic platform that nurtures creativity, fosters artistic growth, and promotes cultural exchange. Its diverse exhibitions and programs reflect its commitment to promoting a wide range of artistic expressions and its dedication to nurturing emerging talent. Through its exhibitions, educational programs, and collaborations, Drawing Room continues to enrich the cultural landscape and inspire creative minds.
