Speaking in Visuals: A New Language
Gazelli Art House
Gazelli Art House, founded in 2010 by Mila Askarova, has been a vibrant hub for art enthusiasts, bringing a fresh perspective to the art scene in London and Baku. The gallery specializes in promoting art from Azerbaijan and its neighbors, aiming to introduce a greater understanding of the rich linguistic, religious, and historical ties that connect these areas to international audiences. Over the years, Gazelli Art House has represented a roster of artists that includes Aziz+Cucher, Derek Boshier, Harold Cohen, Jann Haworth, Francesco Jodice, Recycle Group, Kalliopi Lemos, Khaleb Brooks, Niyaz Najafov, and Perle Fine, among others.
The gallery provides a varied program across practices such as sculpture, photography, painting, video, performance, and virtual reality within both of its sites in London and Baku. It also offers a program of Tuesday Talks, which address themes and ideas surrounding the gallery’s exhibitions. Artist catalogues and books are also available, further enriching the gallery's offerings.
In 2015, Gazelli Art House expanded to support artists working in digital art through its online platform, GAZELL.iO. This platform began as a program of monthly online residencies for artists working in the digital and VR realm. In 2020, to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the acclaimed VR group exhibition series Enter Through the Headset, GAZELL.iO’s VR Library was launched. This encompasses an evolving selection of curated digital artworks, including those of previous GAZELL.iO residents. These are now permanently on view and can be accessed in the GAZELL.iO Project Space on Dover Street.
In 2012, Gazelli Art House launched the Window Project, which utilizes the gallery's façade as an additional platform for displaying art. Since 2015, the initiative has been repurposed to support graduates from various art schools through open call competitions, which take place three times a year. Schools such as Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art are among the renowned institutions that Gazelli Art House has partnered with for this initiative.
Gazelli Art House stands as a testament to the enduring power of art and its ability to inspire, challenge, and engage. Its commitment to showcasing a diverse range of contemporary art, fostering relationships with artists and institutions, and maintaining a dynamic exhibition programme has solidified its status as a beacon of contemporary art. As it looks to the future, Gazelli Art House will undoubtedly continue to be a vital part of the global art scene, championing the work of artists and contributing to the global discourse on contemporary art.
