Transformation: The Metamorphosis of a Blank Canvas

Sélavy

Sélavy, founded in 2020 by Christina and Emmanuel Di Donna, is a unique blend of an online store, salon, and art gallery. The founders, who also run Di Donna Galleries on Madison Avenue, have created a space that presents curated vignettes combining fine art and design spanning mediums, time periods, and cultures. The works are available to explore and instantly collect, making Sélavy a unique player in the art world.

Emmanuel Di Donna is a leading expert on Surrealist, Modern, and Post-War art. He spent seventeen years at Sotheby’s, where he was Vice Chairman of Impressionist and Modern Art Worldwide, overseeing numerous record-breaking sales and securing significant results for many of the most important private collections to come to market in the past two decades. Christina Floyd Di Donna, who joined Di Donna Galleries in 2015, had her own art advisory firm, Floyd Contemporary, which focused on emerging contemporary artists. She began her career at Sotheby's, where she worked for six years, concentrating on Impressionist & Modern Art and Fine Jewelry.

Sélavy takes an inspired approach, filling the living room-like display space with a unique and unexpected mingling of styles across time periods that plays with and demystifies the ways collectors can live with art. Sélavy takes its name from Marcel Duchamp’s iconic Dadaist alter ego Rrose Sélavy, a phonetic play on the French words éros, c’est la vie.

The gallery is known for its high-caliber showcases of Surrealist and Modern work. It also heads up Sélavy by Di Donna, a uniquely shoppable art and design salon in Southampton. At Sélavy, Di Donna takes an inspired approach, filling the living room-like display space with a unique and unexpected mingling of styles across time periods that plays with and demystifies the ways collectors can live with art.

Christina Di Donna is a big supporter of female artists, and that’s the focus of her collection. There are a lot of women right now that she is looking at, whom she thinks everyone should be looking at as well: Hayal Pozanti, Tara Donovan, Alicja Kwade, Eileen Quinlan, and Loie Hollowell. She also believes that Dorothea Tanning—an amazing female Surrealist who was just as original as her male peers—is an overlooked artist who hasn’t yet gotten their due.

Sélavy stands as a beacon of contemporary art and design, providing a platform for international artists and fostering a vibrant and inclusive art community. As it continues to evolve and expand, the gallery remains committed to showcasing the works of artists who reflect the Zeitgeist and to providing a unique and engaging experience for all who visit.
